Advanced Breast Biopsy Instrumentation (ABBI)
If a suspicious lesion (tissue abnormality) is found in your breast, your doctor will typically request that a biopsy be performed. Ask your Physician about this procedure. Unlike other procedures, the Advanced Breast Biopsy Instrumentation (ABBI) is a one-step process. It retrieves a one-piece tissue sample as opposed to fragmented specimens from other procedures. Having a more complete tissue sample helps in laboratory analysis. The ABBI is a minimally invasive procedure and only requires a local anesthesia. As a result, many patients report minimal disruption in their lives. For more information please call Imaging Services at (580) 531-4775.

Behavioral Health
When life's little moments become too big to handle alone, call on Southwestern Medical Center's Behavioral Health Center. The Center offers Children, Adolescent and Senior Adult programs. Included in these programs are free, confidential assessments; individualized care; and family and social assessments. Call 580-536-0077 or 888-536-6302 for more information.

  • The Children's Program The decision to hospitalize a child is difficult and usually made after other options have failed. The Children's Program recognizes that emotional or behavioral problems do not develop overnight and that positive changes take time. We use a behavior modification approach called The Road, which is designed to help each child accomplish goals. While here, children attend public school in the Center. We place a strong emphasis on intense family and individual therapy, as well as using play therapy, art therapy and structured therapeutic activities for a well-rounded program.
  • The Adolescent Program For some adolescents, the teen years are overwhelmingly difficult. Depression, suicidal behavior, drug and alcohol abuse and problems with parents and authorities become routine. Treatment in the Adolescent Program begins with a thorough evaluation and diagnosis. The treatment team, along with the patient and family, work together to develop an individualized treatment plan. Our program emphasizes intense individual and family therapy, art therapy, drug and alcohol education and prevention, and an outside ROPES course -- an activities therapy that helps build trust and healthy communication skills. The Trail -- a metaphorical journey -- is a specialized component of the program, focusing on anger management, grief issues, recognition of accomplishments, family dynamics and self-esteem. While here, teens attend public school in the Center.
  • The Senior Adult Program Each man or woman who comes to Southwestern Behavioral Health Center for help has a unique history, a deeply personal and individual set of circumstances, and a completely distinct range of needs and goals for the future. The Senior Adult Program is structured with daily activities designed to promote healing and personal growth. Each patient's individualized treatment plan is based on a thorough physical and psychological evaluation and diagnosis. Therapeutic goals are determined and regularly updated by the patient, the patient's family (whenever possible) and the Southwestern Behavioral Health Center's treatment team. Treatment addresses many aspects of the patient's life and includes individual, marital, family and group therapy and special workshops on stress management, assertiveness and other daily living skills. For more information on these programs, please call 580-536-0077 or 888-536-6302.

  • What is a CT or MR Scan used for?
A CT or MR scan is a diagnostic examination. The examination consists of a series of pictures or "slices". These pictures give the physician an image of the part of the body, which is being studied. The scans are done on distinct areas of the body, such as the head, chest, or abdomen, rather than the entire body. Many ailments can be detected and often the results of treatments can be followed.
  • How does a CT scanner work?
By the use of electronic detectors surrounding the body in a large ring, the CT scanner "detects" an X-Ray beam from many different angles. Then, using powerful computers, it produces a cross-sectional picture or "slice". These pictures are initially seen on a computer screen then transferred to film for documentation. A series of these "slices" recorded on film is a CT scan.
  • How does a MR scanner work?
A patient is placed in a magnetic field or influence of a powerful magnet located in a specially constructed room that prevents the entrance of radiowaves. A radiowave is broadcast from an antenna in the magnet, causing the atoms of the patient's body to give off a very, very weak radio signal in response. This is called resonance and cannot be felt or heard. These signals vary depending on the type and health status of the body tissue in which the atoms are located. The signals are picked up by the antenna. Powerful computers are then used to translate these signals into a picture on a computer screen. The picture is then transferred to film for documentation.

Southwestern Rehabilitation Center
The rehab unit at Southwestern Medical Center is dedicated to helping people with disabilities return to productive, independent lifestyles. Principles of advanced comprehensive medical rehabilitation are applied. Using the interdisciplinary team approach, we can help the patient with disabilities attain their highest level of physical, emotional, and social independence. Please call 580-531-4704 for more information. The interdisciplinary team evaluates each patient upon admission. After careful consideration and case study, each member of the team develops an in-depth, goal-oriented, treatment plan. The family is an important ingredient of the rehabilitation process. The team needs the input of the family in all phases of the program. At the Southwestern Rehabilitation Center, there is no such thing as one "typical" treatment program. We design an individual treatment program for each patient, because each patient has different and specific needs that call for a different combination of therapies. By combining these therapies appropriately, under the direction of our medical director and rehab team, we help our patients make significant achievements that lead to recovery.

The team approach is the best approach to the integration of a comprehensive rehab program. The SWMC Rehabilitation Center team includes members from the following disciplines:
